Body of water: An Iced Over Lake
Location: Somewhere in the North Metro
Weather Conditions: overcast, foggy, drizzly

I got a call from Mark last night saying that he and the neighbors were headed out at 7:30 this morning to one of the local lakes. (I would tell you which one, but I was asked not to.) The morning was fogged in with barely a 1/4 mile of visibility and it was drizzling. But it was warm. The air temp was probably in the mid-30s. We on the ice and fishing before 8am. Within ten minutes, the first fish hit. It was a crappie.

For the next three and a half hours, we would go in runs. Sometimes we would land 5-6 fish in as many minutes. Then it would stop. A while later, the same thing would happen. Other times we would get a string where someone would get a fish every few minutes. The fishing was so good, we were probably out there for an hour before we set up our shelters.

We drilled about 16 holes. When one hole stopped producing, we would try another. When that one stopped, we went back to a previous hole. Steve pulled about 5 fish out of one of the holes in less than 10 minutes. All the holes were showing piles of fish whenever we put the fish finder on it. When they weren’t hitting, we were usually at the wrong depth. But at times we were right on them and they still didn’t bite. Maybe they were just in a mood.

This is one of the more popular ice fishing lakes in the metro area, so there were lots of shacks and quite a few cars driving around. Our ice holes straddled one of the main roads on the lake. A “road” being the tracks where most of the cars were driving on the lake.

We nearly walked away with our limit of 10 fish per person. I was only able to land 4. All in all, it was a good day of fishing. The only thing that would have made it better is if the Vikings won their game against New Orleans. I’m not sure if I would have traded one for the other.

Sorry about your Vikes. I felt sad for you and all my other MN friends/family when they lost…and guilty because I had cheered for the Saints.

Glad you had a fabulous fishing day, though!
