Abysmal Start to a Long Weekend

Posted by MNAngler On July - 6 - 2011

Since I had the week off before my new gig, my family and I were able to drive up to my in-law’s cabin a day earlier than we had planned a few months ago. We spent Thursday afternoon and evening leisurely driving up to the Gunflint Trail. We didn’t get to see everything we wanted (stupid state government), but we still enjoyed the drive. It was after dark by the time we arrived, so I wasn’t able to wet a line until the next day.

My first day of the July 4th weekend (Friday) was a bust. I spent a total of 4 hours out on the water (a few in the morning, a half hour around lunch, and more in the evening), but came away with nothing. I had a few bites on an orange and brown jig and pig in the morning, but wasn’t able to hook them. I had no other action the entire day.

My misfortune continued the next morning when Ken and I took his pontoon out to a few of the bays near portages. A bubble gum fluke, jig and pig, and trick worm didn’t entice a single bite.

Fortunately, things would turn around (somewhat) later in the weekend.
