Nemesis Lake

Nemesis Lake

Before George came into town, Greg and I had made an appointment to go fishing earlier this week. As a result, I got to go fishing twice in three days. In this outing, Greg and I decided to hit a lake in the East end of the Twin Cities. The bass are catch-and-release only, so there have been rumors of monster bass in the lake. However, in my three previous outings on the lake, I’ve pulled nothing out. I was out on my float tube all three times so I was limited to one part of the lake.... (more...)

Long Afternoon

Long Afternoon

George popped into town unexpectedly this weeekend to visit his mom and a few relatives. He was able to plan a fishing outing with Greg and Greg’s son and asked me if I wanted to tag along. Far be it for me to refuse fishing time, especially since I haven’t wet a line for two weeks. We hit a lake in the Northern suburbs where Greg and I had tried earlier this summer. After getting on the water at about 10:30am, we decided to start at the other end of the lake where Greg and I saw a... (more...)

Review : Mystery Tackle Box #2

This post is a review for the second Mystery Tackle Box I received in September, 2012. See my Mystery Tackle Box review post for a full review of the service. When I first registered for the Mystery Tackle Box with their super duper promo, I hadn’t intended to continue the service after the first month. However, after receiving the first box, I was impressed enough to give it another month, even at full price. I was not disappointed. The first Mystery Tackle Box was good, but didn’t... (more...)

Small Lake, Small Fish

Small Lake, Small Fish

A week after my last float tube outing, I decided to head back out to the same lake. I wanted to try the other direction from the launch. The wind was blowing toward that shore, so that was a good sign. However, to force myself to cover more ground, I decided to go across the lake and work my way back around. While I crossed the lake, I didn’t want to lose any fishing time. Since I heard the lake had pretty sizable Northern, I threw a five of diamonds as I went across. When I got to the... (more...)

Re-Review : Hobie Mirage Pro Angler

Re-Review : Hobie Mirage Pro Angler

Three years ago, almost to the day, I did a review on the Hobie Mirage Pro Angler. At the time, it had just been announced at ICAST 2009 and won an award for best new product. Last year, I was contacted by the marketing manager, Ron, at HiTempo, the local Hobie dealer to try out the newest version of the fishing kayak. He said several of my complaints had been addressed. We went out one evening last June. Unfortunately, due to a job change, I didn’t get to posting the re-review and a year... (more...)

I had the opportunity to fish CasualBasser‘s favorite lake Tuesday night–in a kayak. The fine folks at HiTempo, the local Hobie dealer, let me try out two versions of their Hobie Mirage Pro Angler (review to come later). Being a pretty big lake, it was nice to be able to get around more than I would in my float tube. Unfortunately, it didn’t help me at all. It was an extremely slow night. I threw a Rage Tail and Condition Buzz buzzbait, both from my Mystery Tackle Box, a texas... (more...)

Hunting in Lily Pad Forests

Hunting in Lily Pad Forests

I had a chance to go out on my float tube for a few hours on Saturday morning. I hit a lake that I had never fished before, but have had my eye on it for a while. It is across the street from one of the lakes that I used to hit with Mark in our early days of fishing together. The lake is small, but deep. I rarely see boats at the public access and I think that’s because the more popular lake is across the street and the public access goes through about a 200 ft channel of lily pads. To... (more...)

Avid Angler Challenge Answer – Lure Limitation

Avid Angler Challenge Answer – Lure Limitation

Yesterday, I posted my first Avid Angler Challenge. It was a challenge that asked what 5 lures you would use if those were the only lures you could use for the rest of your life. When forming the challenge, I tried to structure it so it would be a challenge to me as well. The tough part for me is that I like to target multiple species. Most of the time I go after bass, but I also like to fish for walleye and muskie. I rarely fish anything but an inland lake. Here are my 5 lures in no particular... (more...)

Avid Angler Challenge – Lure Limitation

The Avid Angler Challenge is a meme that issues a periodic challenge to frequent anglers. See the guidelines for how to answer the challenge. For my first challenge, I wanted to learn about lure choices. Why do fisherman use the lures they do? So here it is: If you could only use 5 lures for the rest of your life, which ones would you choose and why? Your answer should follow the following guidelines: A lure is anything that contains a hook, goes on a hook, or decorates a hook One color = one... (more...)

Avid Angler Challenge

When I started my blog a little over 3 years ago, I did it to write about my fishing adventures. What I didn’t expect was the sense of community within the blogosphere and the support I’ve gotten from my fellow anglers, whether they blog themselves or not. In that spirit, I wanted to start a series of posts so that I could keep learning from my cohorts, but also so that beginning anglers can learn from all of us. On a periodic basis, I will issue a challenge. The challenge will have... (more...)
