Wind Fishing

Wind Fishing

Surprise! I’m writing a post! Better yet. I went fishing! Yes, after four months of not touching a rod (except to put them away for the winter), I actually got out and baited a hook. Vince was in town for Christmas and we hit the ice the day after the holiday. It was a bit of a risk because it’s been unseasonably warm so far this winter. We’ve had multitudes of day above freezing and many of the larger lakes have thin ice, and even open water. Check out the story about the... (more...)

Ice Fishing in a Blizzard

Ice Fishing in a Blizzard

The local weathermen were all in a tizzy the past few days because they were predicting a storm to rival the one that hit us last Dec 11. By 1:30pm, the snow was supposed to be coming down in full force, but it wasn’t snowing that heavily. It was just windy. The snow was falling sideways. But that wasn’t going to deter us true Minnesotans from venturing out to try to catch us some fish. My 3 neighbors and I went out to Lake Owasso for the afternoon to see if we could land some walleyes. When... (more...)

Year of the Tiger Fishing: Day 1

Steve, Mark, and I went out to Lake Owasso this afternoon. The air temp wasn’t terribly cold, but it was window. And it started snowing by the time we packed it in. The fish didn’t like the weather either. We were out from about 2:30 to 5:30 with 9 holes in 3 different shelters and and we only caught two Crappie. One was about 6″ and reeled in by Steve’s 5 year-old daughter, so it was very exciting for her to catch her very first fish. Steve reeled in the other at about... (more...)

Ice Walleye Sightings

Ice Walleye Sightings

Last time we were on the ice, Mark talked about the best bite being the hour around sunrise and sunset. We talked about the next time going out at 2:30pm and staying til after dark. We got our chance last night. My brother is in town for Christmas, so he and another friend of his, also an avid angler, joined us. There were quite a few fishermen out yesterday (see left). It was a nice brisk day without much wind. A perfect day to go ice fishing. We set up camp not far from our last outing.... (more...)

First Ice Skunk

First Ice Skunk

Our second day on the ice didn’t turn out as well as our first. We met at 6:30 as planned and were out on the lake from 7:00am to 10:30am and got completely skunked. When we first got on the lake, we set up near the same spot we caught the perch the day before. After nary a bite for about an hour and a half, we moved to the other side of the point. The only action was a tip up going off after we had moved, but the fish let go. We theorized it was a walleye that felt the line and dropped... (more...)

First Ice Fish

When I posted about ice fishing a couple of days ago, I didn’t think I’d be on a lake til at least the new year. But last night we had our neighborhood Christmas party and the topic of ice fishing came up. Several times, actually. It started when a mutual friend of a couple of neighbors was planning to go out in the morning. The two neighbors, Rob and Steve, decided they would go and invited me along. Unfortunately, Mark, my usual fishing buddy, had other commitments and couldn’t... (more...)

Not A Single Nibble

Date: 10/4/2009 Time: 1:45pm-4:45pm Body of water: Lake Owasso Location: Shoreview, MN Weather Conditions: overcast I was coming home from an errand run Saturday afternoon when I saw my fishing buddy, Mark, on the phone in his driveway. He had put a hole in the lower unit of his boat a few weeks ago and I wanted to see whether it had been fixed, but didn’t want to interrupt his call. So I parked the car and got a call from my wife. As I walked to my front door, I saw Mark standing there... (more...)

Slow Night

Date: 7/1/2009 Time: 6:30pm-9:30pm Body of water: Lake Owasso Location: Shoreview, MN Weather Conditions: scattered clouds My old colleague that had introduced me to the super fluke actually lives in Orchard Lake where I fished last week and after our outing, we stopped in to say hi (he also knew the two colleagues I fished with). While talking to him and his wife, I found out that his wife really likes the pink (“bubble gum” to us guys) colored super flukes. Apparently, she has done... (more...)

Fishing (not singing) in the Rain

Species: Largemouth Bass Size: ~14″ Lure used: white pearl super fluke (first cast of the night!) Date: 6/19/2009 Time: 7pm-9:30pm Body of water: Lake Owasso Location: Shoreview, MN Weather Conditions: overcast and rain My neighbor, Mark, and I went out after dinner and were out on the lake by 7pm.  There were some ominous clouds coming in, but we figured we could always get off the lake if we saw lightning.  On my first cast using a super fluke, the retrieve didn’t feel quite right,... (more...)
