MNAngler World Headquarters

One of the great ideas that came out of the Outdoor Blogger Network is their writing prompts. Every week, they suggest a topic for us outdoor bloggery types to write about. I’ve opted out of most of them mainly because, like Troutrageous, I don’t normally have a shortage of things to write about. However, that seems to have changed as of late as I haven’t gotten out on the ice as much as I would have liked this winter. So I’m biting on OBN’s latest photo prompt:... (more...)

Million Dollar Lure

Million Dollar Lure

Muskie lures are among the most expensive lures around, but this one is hook, line, and sinker craziness. Assuming a muskie would go after this thing. The size of it would suggest a killer whale might be a more likely target. Maybe one of my saltwater fishermen readers can tell me what else would attack this squiddy looking lure. I have a hard time buying $15 lures because of fear of snagging them on something on the bottom that won’t let go. Can you imagine losing this one? How many would... (more...)

Bag O’Gear

Bag O'Gear

Not too long ago, my colleague and fishing buddy, Dan, walked into the office with a bag that his dad had given him. It was originally owned by Dan’s Great Uncle, a Benedictine monk and avid fisherman. His name was Angelo Zankle (isn’t that a cool name?) and lived to the age of 106. The bag was full of some really cool, antique fishing equipment. I’ll get to the equipment in a second, but I had to point out that the bag it all came in wasn’t a bag you would get at a grocery... (more...)

I’m Still Here

I'm Still Here

So I blinked and somehow 9 days passed since my last post. I haven’t done that since getting ready for the Lego League regional tournament. Granted, we are now getting ready for the state tournament that takes place a week from Saturday, but my team and I weren’t even working that hard. The time just went ‘poof.’ It’s amazing how time passes so fast some days/weeks. It wasn’t long ago that I was in the hospital for the birth of my kids, and they are now 10... (more...)

Mr. Ice Fishing

Mr. Ice Fishing

When you mention the word “technology,” computers and electronics generally come to mind. But each field has technology that advances its industry to make things easier and more efficient. Ice fishing is no different. When you talk about technology in ice fishing, you have to talk about Dave Genz. He is widely considered the grandfather of modern ice fishing. He developed the clam shell design for temporary ice fishing shelters, the caddy for Vexilar fish finders (now known as the... (more...)

60″ Muskie Caught on Lake Vermillion

60" Muskie Caught on Lake Vermillion

Check out this 60-inch muskie that was caught by Kevin Walsh of Ellendale, MN. He caught it fishing with his buddy on Lake Vermillion in Northern Minnesota on October 16, 2010. This is another story I didn’t get around to posting this fall. It just goes to show that the big ones come out to feed in the fall. I caught mine in October, 2008, a possible record muskie was caught in October, 2009, and now this one. What monster will be reported in October, 2011? Read the original story: Minnesota... (more...)

13 Year Old Girl Catches Record Striped Bass

Last March, I did a post about a 14 year old girl catching a Kentucky state record muskie. That was impressive, but this past fall, she was outdone by someone younger. I heard about this about the time the story came out, but never got around to posting it. Last October, it was reported that at 13 year old girl may have caught a junior world record striped bass. Juliana Merighi caught the monster in Delaware Bay waters on October 24, 2010. It weighed 58 pounds and was 54 inches long. Juliana... (more...)

Goals for 2011

Goals for 2011

Welcome to 2011! As I mentioned last year, I prefer to do goals rather than resolutions. And this year, it happens to fall right into the Writing Prompt that the Outdoor Blogger Network posted earlier this week. Last year, most of my goals focused on the size of the fish I wanted to catch. But as with most things in life, it’s the journey, not the destination, that makes the adventure worthwhile. In keeping with that theme, my goals for 2011 are much more about trying to catch the fish... (more...)
