Ice Driving

I’ve lived in Minnesota all my life (except for a college at Purdue), but this is the first year I’ve been on frozen lakes with any kind of regularity. This year, while I’ve been a passenger in vehicles on the ice, I’ve never actually driven on the ice myself. Until yesterday. Driving on the ice is really no big deal in Minnesota, especially this time of year when the ice is 2 feet thick or more. General guidelines specify that the ice need only be 8-12 inches thick to... (more...)

Happy Holidays

The best part of this time of year is spending time with family and seeing the spirit of the season through children’s eyes. With all the commercialism around us, don’t lose sight of the important things in life. I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, or happy whatever holiday it is you celebrate. See you on the ice. The Father, The Daughter, <br/> and the Lego Spirit

Forgive me, fellow anglers, for I have sinned. It’s been 2 weeks since my last blog post and fishing hasn’t even crossed my mind. Since my last post just before Thanksgiving, I’ve been wholly preoccupied with Legos. That might sound strange, but let me explain. I’m the coach of an all girls Lego League team made up of 4th and 5th grade girls, which includes my 9 year-old daughter. Our competition is coming up this Saturday, so in the past two weeks, I’ve had at... (more...)

On the first weekend after the start of school, our neighborhood gets together for a weenie roast. This year we added a new dimension to it. Ever since the Pudgy Master made his super breakfast pudgy pie, pudgy pies have been in the forefront of our minds at each neighborhood campfire.... (more...)

What is a Pudgy Pie?

A pudgy pie is a “pie” made in a campfire. The recipe is simple: Ingredients: Two slices of bread Filling of your choice Pudgy pie iron Non-stick spray Spray both sides of the pudgy pie iron with non-stick spray. Put one slice of bread on once side of the pudgy pie iron. Add filling. Put other slice of bread on top of filling and first slice of bread. Put pudgy pie iron together and close. Put pudgy pie iron into fire until bread is toasted on both sides. Pudgy Pie Iron A “classic”... (more...)

Wild Game Feast

While this isn’t related to fishing, walleye was a VERY integral part of the festivities, so I thought you might like to see… Our neighborhood held our first ever wild game feast. Everybody brought wild game to share and we had plenty of food, so it was definitely a feast. Hopefully, this will become an annual event. Boiling oil Buffalo Breaded pheasant Beer battered pheasant Moose meatballs Venison Italian and Polish sausage Hossenfeffer in red wine and onion sauce over rice Wild... (more...)
