The Play

Species: Walleye Size: 24″ Lure used: white pearl super fluke Date: 7/23/2008 Time: Evening Body of water: Poplar Lake Location: Gunflint Trail Weather Conditions: [don’t remember] How I caught my largest walleye to date is kind of a funny story that I thought you might enjoy. Ken and I were fishing walleye alley trolling with Lazy Ikes. It was pretty quiet until Ken landed a 12″ walleye on his pole. The lure, because of its treble hooks, got all tangled up in the net. While... (more...)

Date: 7/5/2009 Time: 8-9:00am Body of water: Poplar Lake Location: Gunflint Trail Weather Conditions: sunny, clear, strong wind out of the West The night before, Ken and I had intended to go to the channel on the North side of his cousin’s island where I caught some smallies the first night of Memorial Weekend, but because of our time spent at our favorite hole, we didn’t get a chance to get there. We decided to try the next morning. We got a late start and it was pretty windy. We drifted... (more...)

Date: 7/3/2009 Time: 5-6:00pm Body of water: Poplar Lake Location: Gunflint Trail Weather Conditions: clear Water temp: 65 degrees Ken and I spent the good part of the day installing his new fish finder on his pontoon. Once it was installed and the pontoon was on the water, of course we had to try it out. We went out to Walleye Alley because we were planning to fish there after dinner. We had about an hour, so we put my kids into life jackets and puttered out there. If you’re an avid fisherman... (more...)

Splurge for Color

Splurge for Color

For you more experienced anglers, what I’m about to say is going to come out of the “well, duh” category of fishing. But to those of us that haven’t had the privilege, you don’t know what you’re missing til you’ve got it. So here goes… If you have a boat and are going to fish with it, invest in a good, color, fish finder. Slow Night

Date: 7/1/2009 Time: 6:30pm-9:30pm Body of water: Lake Owasso Location: Shoreview, MN Weather Conditions: scattered clouds My old colleague that had introduced me to the super fluke actually lives in Orchard Lake where I fished last week and after our outing, we stopped in to say hi (he also knew the two colleagues I fished with). While talking to him and his wife, I found out that his wife really likes the pink (“bubble gum” to us guys) colored super flukes. Apparently, she has done... (more...)
