I was out on the boat with Mark, casting for bass when I decided to take a rest and put my rod down. I had left the line long enough for the small, blue rattling Rapala to hang over the bow of the fishing boat and into the water.
It was late in the evening and the angle of the sun going down on the horizon put a spotlight on the surface of the water right next to some lily pads not more than a few feet from the boat. A few inches under the surface of the water, I could plainly see the back of a HUGE muskie.
Just as I was going to pick up the rod to twitch the lure, I saw the monster lunge and my rod went from resting quietly to nearly jumping off the boat. I grabbed the rod and set the hook and the giant took off sending my drag screaming. Mark grabbed the net as I reeled the monster back to the boat. I then heard my self say, “Ack! I forgot my camera!” Just as the muskie got near the boat…
I woke up.
Yes, that’s right. It was another dream. I haven’t wet a line for a week and a half. But more importantly, I haven’t caught a decent fish since my trip to Lake Mille Lacs almost a month ago. Apparently, I need to feel the tug of a lunker on my line.
Not to fear, though. My brother is flying in from Boulder tomorrow and we’ll be fishing one of the local lakes Thursday before heading to my dad’s cabin this weekend. We should be able to get a lot of fishing in the next few days.
He sent me an email a few days ago saying he couldn’t wait to outfish me. The way things are going lately, that shouldn’t be hard. But he’s generally a much better bass fisherman that I am anyway, so even if I was “on”, I’m sure he’d outdo me.
I’m looking forward to picking up some pointers from him while he’s here. He’s the one that put me on to jig and pigs, but since I haven’t caught anything on one, I’m anxious to see it fished by someone who knows what they’re doing.
Stay tuned for (hopefully) some stories of lunkers. I hope to catch at least one fish to qualify for Bass Pundit’s Minnesocold Bass Bloggers Derby.

I flew into (and out of) Minneapolis this week. From the air I see you have lakes every freaking where. You should be fishing at least twice per day.
Yes, Clif, you pretty much can’t spit without hitting a lake. I would love to be fishing twice a day. Life always seems to get in the way.
