Adding to the Fish Fry Kitty

Adding to the Fish Fry Kitty

By Tuesday night, Ken, George, and I had been on the water for a total of about 13 man-hours. The only good fish during that time was on my second cast of the week. The rest of the time was pretty dismal. We decided we would head out to Walleye Alley to see what we could stir up and George’s wife, April, decided to join us (just to be outside, not to fish). We started on the East end and as we approached, we saw two loons with their little baby. We were all enthralled with the little family,... (more...)

Calm Before the Storm

Calm Before the Storm

After landing the nice fish Saturday night, it got quiet. Real quiet. I opted to sleep in Sunday morning since I was exhausted from the trip up to the Gunflint Trail. The next available time I had to get out was Sunday night. Ken, George, and I hit the three bays near Liz Lake portage that have been productive for us in the past. Unfortunately, it wasn’t so this night. Ken and George each landed a small northern, but there was little other action for the night. George did, however, take... (more...)

Always Keep a Tight Line

Always Keep a Tight Line

I spent fourth of July week with Mrs. MNAngler’s family up at Ken’s cabin on the Gunflint Trail. Ken and George were both there and we did a lot of fishing. The week started out slow, but picked up enough for us to supply the fish fry planned for Friday night. Mrs. MNAngler, our two kids, and I arrived Saturday evening. After having a bite to eat, Ken suggested I take his boat out while he waited for George and his wife to arrive. I got out on the water at about 8:00pm and decided... (more...)

Super Moon Saturday

Super Moon Saturday

George came into town last Saturday so he, Greg, Ken, and I squeezed into Greg’s Alumacraft and hit a lake that Greg has been on, but we other three hadn’t. Since it was forecasted to rain in the afternoon, we got up early and were on the water by 8am. We started at some lily pads not far from the boat launch. It was quiet for quite a while until Ken hooked the first fish of the day, a 14″ bucketmouth. He hooked it on a super fluke in the baby bass color. I’ve had that... (more...)

Slow Start to 2013

Slow Start to 2013

About two weeks ago, I finally got out on the water for the first time this year (yes, lame, I know). Our weird Spring has caused a delay in the start of the fishing season for me, but the good news is I didn’t have to wait long for bass opener to come around. Not that I was fishing that day. I was able to connect up with Greg who I got out with a few times last year. We decided to try some new water a few clicks North of The Cities. The Minnesota DNR web site showed the lake as a good... (more...)

Happy Bloggaversary to Me

Happy Bloggaversary to Me

As I was driving in to work this morning, I had heard on the radio that it was the 4th anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death. It occurred to me that I started this blog right around the same time. Then I realized I had missed my own bloggaversary! Yesterday marked the 4th anniversary of this humble fishing blog. It’s hard to believe it’s been four years. I am no longer seeing the traffic growth I once did, but I also haven’t been writing lately. I have a couple of trips... (more...)

GoPro Will Soon Lose Marketshare

GoPro Will Soon Lose Marketshare

As outdoorsmen (and women) many of us like to share our accomplishments with friends and family, sometimes the world. Whether that be our latest catch, latest kill, or the view from the top of the mountain we just climbed. A lot of the fun isn’t in the destination, but in the journey. And we like to share that, too. Enter GoPro. GoPro was created by Nick Woodman more than 10 years ago when he wanted to record his surfing adventures. He started out by strapping a camera to his wrist. He... (more...)

Bass Opener, 2013

Bass Opener, 2013

The Minnesota Bass season typically opens two weeks after the fabled walleye opener. That usually puts it on Memorial Day weekend. The forecast for the weekend this year was for rain. Every day. So this is what I ended up doing last weekend: Unfortunately, the weatherman was wrong and it only sprinkled a little bit over the three days. It didn’t really rain until Monday night. So I missed an opportunity. Forecasts show it getting nicer this weekend, so I’m aiming to wet a line Sunday... (more...)

Chandeleiring Ice

Chandeleiring Ice

Sometimes Mother Nature creates contradictions that some might call an oxymoron. A common example of this is known as a sun-shower (rain while it the sun is shining). A happy consequence of such an occurrence is a rainbow. If you’re lucky, you might see a double rainbow. This past weekend, with the sudden change in temperature, it seems Winter and Spring collided and produced a different kind of oxymoron: 70 degree temperatures with ice still on local lakes. The consequence of this contradiction... (more...)

Ice Out Watch 2013

Ice Out Watch 2013

After a snow-crazy April, Spring came in like a lion. We went from 3″ of snow dropping on us on Monday (and 7″ the week before), to 70 degree temps 3 days in a row. With that, Spring made its presence known and Ice Out Watch 2013 can now begin in earnest. Unlike last year when ice out took a matter of days across the state, this year, anglers are nervous about whether ice out would happen in time for Fishing Opener. A conversation with a resident of Park Rapids, MN yesterday revealed... (more...)
