Review : Mystery Tackle Box

In today’s world of contextual advertising, web sites pick up on your hobbies and interests pretty quickly. Obviously, many of the ads that I see have to do with fishing. When I first saw the ads for the Mystery Tackle Box, it really didn’t peak my interest because it felt like a gimmick ad. One that was just trying to get you to click on it to bring you to a big box store site. But then I read an article on TechCrunch about the startup. It got me intrigued. I especially liked the... (more...)

The Right Color is Magic

The Right Color is Magic

This past weekend was our annual neighborhood camping trip. In previous years, boats were towed along, but this year, Mark was towing a camper and Steve was towing a trailer, so no boats could come. However, I brought my float tube and was able to get a few hours on the nearby lake by myself. Do to various goings on, I didn’t get on the lake until about 3:30. It had been sunny most of the day, so my plan was to look for fish in the lily pad field not far from the fishing pier. I put in... (more...)

2012 Recycled Fish 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon

The magic of technology today is that you can learn about a lot of things that traditional media might not tell you about, especially in sub-cultures. Even so, word of some things get around slower than others. While I was on Facebook this evening, The Argosgirl Chronicles shared a link to the Recycled Fish 24 Hour Fish-A-Thon. As a participant, you are expected to do three things: To fish for 24 hours straight, with a partner, and document your catches with a digital camera, then post them to... (more...)

MNAngler, Jr. and Crispy Fins

As much as I would like to take MNAngler, Jr. out fishing more often, opportunities are few and far between. I bought him a new fishing rod a few weeks ago because last fall, he dropped his Spiderman rod and reel in the lake. Then the replacement Transformers rod and reel promptly broke. This time I invested in a beginner’s panfish fishing kit combo instead of a youth pole. Hopefully, it will hold up better, assuming MNAngler, Jr. can hold on to it. The rod is taller than he is, but judging... (more...)

Orvis Casting Course

Orvis Casting Course

When I was in Bend, OR for my family reunion last fall, I heard there was an Orvis store in town. While I’m not a fly fisherman, I was hoping I could get an idea of where a bass fisherman could wet a line. Besides, I can’t resist a fishing store. Mrs. MNAngler and my daughter came in to town with us and, of course, weren’t interested in fishing stuff, so they went their merry way and MNAngler, Jr. and I went to Orvis. A few minutes after arriving at the store, Mrs. MNAngler called... (more...)

A River Adventure

A River Adventure

After our last adventure, George’s friend, Greg, and I decided we would get together again to puruse some fish. Greg works near the Mississippi River, so we thought we would try fishing the river. It was something neither of us had done and it would allow us to get started earlier. We met at 5:45 and were on the river by 6:00. So as not to come into the adventure completely unprepared, I did some research on-line before I left work. I found a great page at TakeMeFishing.org that suggested... (more...)

Best Bucketmouth Day Ever

Best Bucketmouth Day Ever

Last Thursday night, I ran into my neighbor Mark while he was walking his dog. I asked him, jokingly, when we were going to go fishing next. He said he was going the next morning at 5am and that I was welcome to come along. Since there wasn’t much going on at work that day, I decided to go. We didn’t leave our houses until 5:30 or so because Mark’s wife didn’t want him to wake up the dog too early who would in turn rouse up the rest of the house. By 6am, we were fishing. We... (more...)

Rainbow Trout Management

Rainbow Trout Management

On our way up to my father-in-law’s cabin, Mrs. MNAngler and I decided to look for the MN DNR Fishery that is on Hwy 61 on the North Shore of Lake Superior. We hadn’t been there in years and thought the kids might like it. We found it not far up the scenic route between Duluth and Two Harbors. The French River hatchery sits next to the MN DNR Area Headquarters and raises Rainbow Trout for release into regional lakes and streams. They trap Rainbows going up stream to spawn and harvest... (more...)

Slump After the Rain

Slump After the Rain

On our last day, we had planned to get started on the caps for the roof, but the weather forecast was about 4 hours off. It wasn’t supposed to start raining until 1:00pm, but it started raining at 9:00am. That put a damper on roofing and fishing. It was a light rain, but enough that it was able keep us off the roof and the lake. The other annoyance was that it was on and off. At one point in the morning, the ladies had convinced Ken and I to go fishing during a lull, but as soon as we started... (more...)

Trifecta!

Trifecta!

Later in the evening, Ken, George, and I headed out on the pontoon. One of our usual spots we hadn’t hit yet was the three bays between the Prune Lake and Liz Lake portages. We first started in the bay near Prune Lake. I started with a bubble gum fluke because I was after my species trifecta. Using a fluke allows me to target multiple species at once. A couple of casts in and I was on the board: Species: Smallmouth bass Size: 10″ Lure used: Bubble gum super fluke George also got... (more...)
